Kalerwe is part of the slummy areas in and around Kampala with many idle youth who engage in theft and robbery coupled with a lot of drugs. At the same time this area has a lot of potential since it is a hub for fresh food stuff and also it has one of the biggest abattoirs in Uganda. The youth in this area have been encouraged to learn the skill of making horn products. WIIY has to date been able to fund the training of these youth and also equip them with modern machinery to be able to produce quality products from cow horns.
A baker without a bakery
Nansana municipality is one of the biggest and most populated municipalities in Uganda with a very big population of youth. Nansana is known for its youth engaging in riotous activities. Despite this being so there is a lot of potential in the area for business. This is evidenced by a semblance of five banks (Centenary bank, Bank of Africa, Opportunity Bank, Pride Microfinance, and Finance trust Bank) in a spell of five years.
WIIY has invested in this youth group and to date the group is able to produce bakery products like small cakes, wedding cakes, bread under their brand of Pastries Oven.
A group of youth identified a gap in the photography business by positioning themselves as Mobile Photographers. WIIY has bought for them mobile studio equipment and also been able to house them in their premises as a stationed studio for one year in order that they can run the business profitably.
